Back is one of the most frequent locations of pain. Eight out of ten adults will experience at least one bout of Back Pain at some time in their lives. Back Pain is a condition that usually is caused when one or more structures in the back such as the muscles, cartilage, bones or spinal cord get strained/ injured.

Causes of Back Pain

  • Stress or injury to the back muscles. These may include back sprain or strain, overload on back muscles due to obesity, unusual stress, lifting heavy objects or pregnancy.
  • A disease or injury involving the back bones (vertebrae). The causes may include fracture from an accident or as a result of Osteoporosis (which causes bone-thinning)
  • Degenerative Arthritis. The medical condition causes stiffness and  pain in the back.

Prevention from Back Pain

According to the spine surgeon, you can prevent some forms of back pain by strengthening your back with the help of certain exercises. Avoiding activities that lead to back injury can also be helpful. Some of the measures that may help prevent back pain include:

  • Maintaining good posture.
  • Sleeping in proper posture i.e. on your side or on your back with a pillow under your knees.
  • Exercising regularly.
  • Practicing abdominal crunches to strengthen abdominal muscles. Walk or swim can help.
  • Avoid lifting, twisting and bending at the same time.
  • Avoiding sitting or standing for extended periods of time.
